Koumas to hold Albion talks

13 March 2002

At last, a ray of sunshine on the horizon. Tranmere Rovers have issued the following press release concerning the future of Jason Koumas:

POSSIBLE TRANSFER OF JASON KOUMAS

Earlier in the season Tranmere Rovers received a formal offer from West Bromwich Albion for the transfer of Jason Koumas.

The proposal was unacceptable to Tranmere Rovers in a number of respects but the Player indicated his willingness to enter into discussions with West Bromwich Albion.

Tranmere Rovers has today received an increased formal offer from West Bromwich Albion for the transfer of Jason Koumas and the Player has indicated a strong desire to enter into discussions with West Bromwich Albion.

The increased offer comprises:

  1. £1 million payable on completion.
  2. £1 million payable 12 months after completion.
  3. Further contingent payments which in total could reach an amount up to £750,000 dependent on West Bromwich Albion's promotion and player appearances.
  4. A sell-on clause.

Taking into account:

  • the value and structure of the increased offer;
  • the need for Tranmere Rovers to ensure their continued financial stability;
  • the Manager's desire to offer extended contracts to certain existing players and bring in new players over the coming months; and
  • the Player's expressed desire to enter into discussions with West Bromwich Albion;

the Club has agreed to allow Jason Koumas to meet with representatives from West Bromwich Albion with a view to formalising contract terms.

The Board confirms that, if the deal goes through as outlined above, all of the initial guaranteed payment received in the first year of £1 million will be made available to the Manager for immediate investment in the first team.

The Club can confirm that no other serious approach or formal offer has been received for Jason Koumas in the last 12 months.

As Tranmere Rovers' supporters are aware, there has been constant speculation surrounding the sale of Jason Koumas for well over 12 months.

Whilst the Player has sought to remain focused, the Club feels that a further period of prolonged speculation will prove to be a distraction which is not in the best interests of the Player, the team or the Club.

A further announcement will be made as soon as possible informing supporters if the transfer is to proceed.

Hurrah!
