Petrol crisis: No plans for postponement

12 September 2000

The Crewe game tonight is still on, and the Football League have no plans to take action yet over the difficulties that many fans will be having in getting to away games this week (a full League programme of 33 matches will still be played). The League expressed sympathy with the clubs and fans, and admitted that attendances were likely to be hit as a result of the shortages, but merely suggested that it was up to everyone to soldier on as best they could.

At least Albion have been more fortunate than some with the timing of the crisis - tonight's game at Crewe is probably one of the season's shortest trips from West Bromwich aside from the local derbies - and the weekend's home game just happens to be one of those local derbies against Birmingham, so neither side should be seriously affected.

Not much consolation for Cliff Crancher, a diehard Albion fan for many years - despite living in Southend and making a journey of over three hours each way for every home game. "After all that fuss yesterday it looks 99% certain that the bloody petrol situation has scuppered my hopes of going tonight" said Cliff. "Every petrol station for miles is closed and has been since late yesterday afternoon".
