Signings are like buses...

23 March 2000

Albion have made an almost astonishing late surge on the transfer front as the deadline approaches. To add to the loan signing of Des Lyttle, who joined in time to play in Tuesday's debacle at Portsmouth, the following new faces (or, in some cases, old ones!) have appeared at the Hawthorns:

  • Neil Clement - Signed from Chelsea on loan until the end of the season. Clement is a product of the School of Excellence and made his debut for Chelsea last season against West Ham and at 22 is as excellent on the ball as you would expect from a Chelsea player. He can play at left back or on the left side of a back three
  • Georges Santos - Signed for £25,000 until the end of the season from Tranmere. Very highly rated by many Baggies fans who've seen him play, this Frenchman, 29, is a utility player with a reputation as a bit of a hard man and who seems to have fallen from favour, having made only 11 first team appearances this season. Megson may well play him to add some "bite" in midfield!
  • Tony Butler - Signed for £140,000 from Port Vale. Butler, 27, is a centre half, which has become a crucial area for Albion given the long term injury to Sigurdsson and the impending suspension of Matt Carbon

And finally, to the joy of those who still have vivid memories of the 1992/3 season...

  • Bob Taylor - Yes, it's true, Superbob is back. After discussions last night, Bob arrived for the standard medical and stated that he was delighted to be back and hoped to finish his playing days at the Club. He has always said he loved being at Albion, and certainly everyone here has fond memories of him

If there's one signing that will get the fans right behind the team as they try to stay in Division One, Bob's is it! It's also guaranteed to sell the remaining tickets in Albion's allocation for Saturday's game at Man City - a fixture that is all-ticket for Baggies fans...
