Megson sacked !

26 October 2004

Sky Sports and various local radio stations have just reported that Gary Megson has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. Frank Burrows is to take over as caretaker manager while a permanent replacement is found.

The news comes as a sad end to an era that has seen Albion rubbing shoulders with the "big boys" again for the first time in some two decades, but after the events of the past few days it was hard to see any alternative. Megson's admission that the players were no longer interested in training, and his statement that he would leave in the summer regardless, have made his position untenable and the sooner he moved aside the better for all concerned.

A statement on the Official Web Site has now confirmed that Megson had informed the Club earlier in writing that he would not be staying after the summer, and that they took this as a letter of resignation and decided it was for the best if he were to leave immediately. The Club also expressed their thanks to Megson for the achievements he had made over the last four and a half years.

Thanks for helping restore some real pride to our club, Gary, and all the best for your future career. Now let the media bunfight begin as we look for a new chief...
