Roberts and Dichio to leave?

12 January 2004

According to reports in the local press, Albion have accepted an offer from Wigan Athletic for striker Jason Roberts. Somewhat bizarrely, Wigan's manager Paul Jewell has been quoted as saying "We have made a bid and I think it has been accepted. We are waiting to hear back from West Brom. Maybe their fax machine is broken."

No official confirmation has been made yet by Albion, though some reports suggest that the fee for Roberts will be around a million - a figure many would consider to be derisory given that we paid over twice that much for him - while others have reported it as a more realistic £1.75 million.

Meanwhile, rumours abound that striker Danny Dichio has been seen at Millwall's training ground alongside Ray Wilkins, with the suggestion is that he will sign this week in time for their game against Sunderland.

With a question mark hanging over the longer term future of Lee Hughes, the sale of both Roberts and Dichio would leave us facing the second half of our promotion campaign with only three first team strikers on the books.
