Megson spotted in Norway

22 July 2002

Albion may have decided not to make the annual pilgrimage to Scandinavia to play, but manager Gary Megson still made the trip to Norway according to BOING reader Stian Boe who saw him mentioned in their press.

According to the Norwegian paper VG, Megson was at the game between Bryne-Bod? and Glimt yesterday, watching Glimt attacker Bengt Saeterne - who has been watched by a lot of clubs ths year, and came close to signing for Rosenborg. Available as a Bosman at the start of 2003, the paper reckons he would cost somewhere in the £1 million to £1.5 million range to sign now.

Meanwhile, South African midfield triallist Macbeth Sibaya has been excused training today because of travel fatigue. Macbeth was quoted as saying "Opportunities like this don't come along like this everyday - this is my big chance. There's no way I could ignore Albion's interest and I want to have a look at them. I am determined to make the grade". An interesting contrast to Thomas Hitzelsberger, who said of his impending move to Seal Park: "The decisive step was to make a backward step to make the leap into the professional game". We couldn't have put it better!

And finally, press reports at the weekend suggested we had made a £500k bid for Luton's left back Matthew Taylor - but they had refused. The Sunday Mirror reckoned that Megson was lining up a swoop for Birmingham's Geoff Horsfield after accepting he won't be able to re-sign Lee Hughes, adding that 'Megson refuses to break Albion's wage scale to meet the £17k a week Hughes is paid by Coventry'. With Hughes supposedly having said he'd come back for £10k a week, we at BOING reckon it's more a case of refusing to meet the £5 million asking price - but with Coventry in serious financial trouble, who knows what may happen...
