Wolves open the door

Tonight's win for Millwall has made two major changes to the situation at the top of Division One. First, it has made certain of Manchester City's promotion to the Premiership; technically, Albion can still pass them on points by winning all three games while City lose all three, but this would now only deny them the title.

But more significantly, they have now placed promotion firmly into our grasp as well by putting us level on points with a game in hand. Two wins and a draw from our last three games would guarantee us second spot and consign Wolves to the playoffs - in which, on tonight's showing, they will struggle. Manager Dave Jones tried to put a brave face on their position, saying "Nothing is decided yet. There are still two games to go and there is still a chance we can get automatic promotion". But with Albion now favourites for second place he didn't look at all convinced. Also unconvincing was one-time Albion target Kevin Cooper, who recovered from his attack of blurred vision to play but was substituted after a performance that would have seen him dropped immediately to the reserves had he made it to the Hawthorns.
