Koumas says "no", say Tranmere

27 March 2002

Despite the statements from Albion that Koumas has agreed terms and was expected to sign and report for training on Thursday to begin his Albion career, the Tranmere Rovers official site is now saying that he has informed them that he has decided to stay put because he didn't feel the move was right for him. The report goes on to say that "Jason now hopes to return with a clear head and concentrate on Rovers final push for the play offs."

Whether the position is final remains to be seen. The fact that Koumas does not drive may have had a bearing on his decision - he doesn't have a driving license or a car - as may the fact that his wife is soon to give birth. Or maybe the speculation of interest from other clubs in the area has convinced him to hang on. But with Albion's current form, and last night's win over Crewe, it's hard to see that the move would not have been right for football reasons.

We should also remember, of course, how many other transfers have been "dead and buried" over the last year or two, only to suddenly burst into life. At least one source claiming to have inside knowledge tells us that the move will still go ahead and that Tranmere desperately need the money.
