Knives out at the Blades

17 March 2002

In the aftermath of yesterday's debacle at Sheffield United, their manager Neil Warnock has taken action against two of the culprits. Patrick Suffo, sent off for headbutting Albion skipper Derek McInnes, has been placed on the transfer list and Georges Santos, sent off for attempting to cripple Andy Johnson, has been told he will not play for the club again. Both Warnock and his Chairman have said that they believe Albion should get the three points and that the game should not be replayed, although their Chairman seemed to believe that the final score had been 3-1 rather than 3-0. Warnock stated:

"I can't condone anything, the sendings-off were justified and we are going to take as severe action as we can with those players. Some of the accusations that have been made are totally out of order regarding trying to get the game abandoned. I totally refute that, and it's disgraceful that it's even been said. It's been said to add credence to their argument, but I'm happy for them to have the points."

Warnock's comments were aimed at Albion manager Gary Megson, who said after the game:

"There was a single person on their bench telling people to come off and go down, in the certain knowledge that the game would not be allowed to finish."

Warnock hit back at Megson, saying

"Anyone who knows Gary Megson knows he's the biggest moaner around. The way he goes on on the bench is an absolute disgrace sometimes. Gary has to look in the mirror and put his own house in order."

Interesting comments from somebody who has been reported as shouting "break his legs" to his players during games...
