Cooper move confusion

15 March 2002

Albion target Kevin Cooper has turned down the opportunity of a transfer, according to Soccernet (not the official Wimbledon site as we earlier reported, apologies to anybody who was misled or confused). Dons manager Terry Burton is quoted as saying:

"He's our player and I'm delighted he's turned down a move. He has said he wants to stay at Wimbledon and I am very pleased because he is a very important player. The speculation didn't affect him this week and it won't at the weekend - he will be in the side."

However, at the time of writing there is no mention of this on the official Wimbledon site.

Meanwhile, Teamtalk have published what they claim to be an "Exclusive" story, in which they state that Jason Koumas could be the subject of a "dramatic 11th hour raid" by Everton, which he might find tempting. Perhaps. Maybe.

The sole basis for the story appears to be the fact that Everton have just changed manager, have some money to spend and could therefore afford Koumas - not that many Premiership clubs couldn't, of course. Oh yes, and Koumas is from Merseyside. Which is where Tranmere are. And Everton, too. The story is backed up by a quote from Koumas' agent, who states that they have heard "nothing" from Everton at all.

On the face of it, the only exclusive thing here is that nobody else has bothered to make the story up - although the possible steal of Koumas is beginning to get reported elsewhere now using the term "...has been linked with...". Koumas left talks with Albion to have a think about the move over the weekend.
