Hendry in on loan?

25 February 2002

Rumours were going around on Saturday that the Club were looking at taking experienced defender Colin Hendry on loan as cover for the injured Darren Moore. Possibly prompted by a rather average performance from Tony Butler at Millwall, the loan would give Moore time to recover to full fitness and perhaps even long enough for his hernia problem to get sorted out in time for the end of season run-in and the playoffs. However, Butler's considerably improved showing, against an admittedly disorganised Portsmouth side, may have kept his first team run going wih Hendry acting purely as cover. With Moore out of action, we can no longer afford to lose one of our three remaining centre halves without having to reorganise the formation.

Although getting on in years, Hendry would still prove a commanding figure in the centre of a back three as long as other players could cover for his lack of pace. During the first leg of last season's playoff semi finals, Hendry was skinned by Hughes on a regular basis - but by the second leg he had learned his lesson and proved to be a major factor in Albion's inability to get a result at the Reebok. Certainly his presence and experience would prove a valuable asset to Albion in their bid for promotion.
