Burgess out for a month

16 August 2000

Central defender Daryl Burgess will be out of action for at least a month after breaking a bone in his foot during training. With the departure of Paul Raven to Grimsby, Larus Sigurdsson still recovering from his long-term injury and Paul Mardon out of action with a thigh problem and seriously lacking in recent first team action, it means we only have Carbon and Butler available from the experienced first team defence for Saturday's game.

Bleak though that may seem, it's not quite that desperate - we still have players like the Chambers twins and Daniel Gabbidon who can come in and do a job in defence, or we could play Clement there and put someone else at left back - or play three across the back instead of four. Nonetheless, it's still a worring situation to be in after one game of the new season...
