Sack the Pig....?

15 October 2003

All those who were at The Hawthorns last night couldn't fail to have heard the United fans chanting "sack the pig" after they went 2 - 0 up. I had presumed that this was an obnoxious reference to Gary Megson's facial features or even his personal hygiene, but I mentioned it to a Blades fan who called me to gloat this morning, and he set the record straight.

Apparently in Sheffield "pig" is a term of endearment, much like we refer to the inhabitants of the Custard Bowl as Tatters, Dingles or Doritos, and those from Birmingham 6 as Scum, Filth or Filthy Scum. Both halves of Sheffield refer to the other as pigs and at local derby games I'm informed that there are always several plastic or inflatable pigs taken into the ground, dressed in the opposition team's colours. So Meggo is a "pig" simply because he's a Wednesdayite, nothing more. By the same token, all Wednesday fans call Warnock a pig; then again, probably a lot of others do too.
