No callup for Hoult

10 February 2003

Mark Lawrenson, writing in today's Mirror, has ridiculed the selection of David James for the England friendly ahead of Albion's Russell Hoult:

"As for James, his selection defies belief. He has had a catastrophic season for West Ham and West Brom's Russell Hoult would have been a better choice."

"Hoult made a mistake for Bolton's goal on Saturday yet you can count on the fingers of one hand how many times he has cost his side goals this season. You would have to be a centipede to do the same for James!"

"James has done brilliantly at talking up his chances for England but the simple truth is that even Eriksson must have doubts about his credentials. 'Calamity' has never played a competitive game for England, which says it all. So why on earth persevere with him?"

"Can anyone really picture James being England's keeper at the next World Cup? He is simply not good enough and his form for West Ham this year has only confirmed it."
