Koumas - the water's muddy

23 August 2002

The on-off saga of Jason Koumas' move to the Hawthorns took another twist when the young midfielder asked Tranmere Rovers for a move. Apparently frustrated by Tranmere's failure to accept the bid from Albion for his services, the request for a move means that he will no longer get the 10% share of the transfer fee that he would have got if Tranmere themselves had decided to sell him.

It seems the reports that Tranmere had agreed a fee of 2.5 million were somewhat premature - Tranmere seem to be claiming that they want the same fee they agreed with Albion last season, which had a large lump related to Albion getting promoted. Albion, however, are now promoted - so the promotion-related element of the fee would seem rather less appropriate and presumably explains their lower offer.

Meanwhile, Tranmere say that they are unaware of a 24 hour deadline that they claim Albion have imposed on the deal. So, in that case, why are they making a statement about it?
