Varga joins on loan

19 March 2002

Albion have taken Slovakian defender Stanislav Varga on loan from Sunderland for the rest of the season. Albion fans might not have a great opinion of Varga, who conceded a penalty after getting the runaround from Jason Roberts in our FA Cup game this season, but Sunderland fans in general rate him highly.

Varga has joined purely as cover - Larus Sigurdsson looks set to miss the Barnsley and Coventry games if his booking on Saturday is upheld in the League's discussions on Thursday, which seems likely. With only Tony Butler as cover, and Darren Moore still carrying his hernia, Varga's presence will prove valuable to the squad.

Varga cost Sunderland £800,000 two years ago when he joined from Slovan Bratislava and is a whopping 6 foot 5 inches tall!
