Going down the Kabul road...
11 December 2001
Thanks to the involvement of lifelong fan and Radio 5 presenter Adrian Chiles, Albion have played a small part in helping life in Afghanistan return to normal following the end of the Taliban rule. Today's Sun carried the following story:
Baggies' shorts for Afghan aces
SOCCER team West Bromwich Albion are set to gain an army of new fans ? by sending their kit to Afghans.
The First Division club is donating last season?s away strip after a plea by Radio 5 Live presenter Adrian Chiles, a lifelong Baggies fan.
The station?s Kabul correspondent Phil Mackie told him soccer was starting up after Taliban rule, but there was a shortage of equipment.
Adrian said: ?They?re sports-mad over there and very anxious to get back to normal, so I thought I would try to do something about it.?
West Brom came up with 16 strips, while JJB Sports and the West Bromwich Building Society also helped out. Radio 5?s Caroline Wyatt is taking the gear out on a UN flight.
Adrian said Phil would choose which team gets the kit, adding: ?No doubt they?ll win 1-0 every week ? just like the Albion.?
Afghans have been flocking to matches since the end of the Taliban, who used Kabul?s stadium for executions.

Pity Barry Fry's not still at St Andrews. They could have probably sent 16 spare players as well...
