Moore finally on the way?

25 August 2001

Reports from the Portsmouth area are saying that their Club have finally accepted an offer from Albion for skipper and central defender Darren Moore. The actual amount varies from one report to another, and could be anywhere between 600 thousand and 1.5 million - possibly depending on appearances. The player is said to be in West Bromwich over the weekend to discuss personal terms.

Moore was dropped from the Portsmouth first team after what seems to be a disagreement with manager Graham Rix, although the Worthington Cup defeat by Colchester has prompted Rix to make several changes to his side. Director of Football Harry Redknapp had the following to say when interviewed by Radio Solent:

"It's Graham's decsion. He wanted to make changes and he left Darren Moore out of the side at Stockport. West Brom have showed some interest, but nothing is finalised yet."

"They have made an offer and we have agreed terms. We didn't need the money to sign Burchill. An offer came in and Graham said 'yes'. I don't know what they offered before, but they have upped it."

"Graham has decided Moore is no longer in his plans. He is going to still play with three centre halves and wing backs. He wants to play a bit of football from the back."

The reports also suggest that Moore will be a spectator on Monday at the Gillingham game, as player registrations can't be made over the weekend. It will therefore be some time before he makes his first Albion appearance - two weeks today at home against Manchester City.
