More Hughes rumours

07 August 2001

The weekend's Sports Argus reckons that Everton are now the "dark horses" in the race to sign Lee Hughes. In an article riddled with cliches, Hughes, the Smethwick-born striker, hit man, hotshot, and ginger-haired ace has been the target of an approach to his agents by Everton, the Toffemen and/or the Goodison Park club. The article goes on to say that Coventry City, the relegated Highfield Road outfit, and Manchester City, the Maine Road ship, are the only first division clubs that Hughes would consider joining.

Everton, the Toffeemen, etc, etc, were linked with Hughes over a month ago according to rumours, but no fee is mentioned other than the £5 million rating commonly attributed to him. Everton are looking to replace Francis Jeffers (no aliases here) who left for Arsenal (or here) in the summer.
