Appleton signs

18 January 2001

Michael Appleton has completed his move from Preston NE to West Brom in a £750,000 deal - which Albion have admitted was too much for a player that would be out of contract in the summer. However, with McInnes and Oliver still out injured and Jordao suspended for Saturday's game against Sheffield United, the Club have been quick to point out that their willingness to pay the money necessary to get him in should be taken as a sign of ambition - which, frankly, is just what it is. With almost enough points to guarantee safety from relegation this season, we could have waited till the summer and got him for nothing - but in practice we'd have had to pay a larger signing on fee so we wouldn't have been that much better off.

Sheffield will also have a new face in the side for Saturday's game, having just signed some bloke called Paul Peschisolido on loan from Fulham. I seem to remember he always had a habit of scoring against us as well as for us. Arse...
