Megson contract shock!

05 December 2000

The media are (or soon will be) reporting that Albion manager Gary Megson has signed a three year contract with West Brom, quoting him as saying that he started the season without one and had felt uncomfortable about asking players to commit themselves to contracts when he hadn't done so himself.

Why the shock, then? Well, the clear suggestion from these reports is that Megson has only just signed the contract - i.e. in the last day or so. In fact, Megson signed the contract back in August when he felt the discomfort mentioned above - having been offered it back in March when he first joined the Club - and what's more, he confirmed this to shareholders at the Club's AGM when asked about his long term future.

So why has the story suddenly popped up? Your guess is as good as mine, but the fact that it has appeared on the Club's official website has apparently had Chief Executive John Wile reaching for the telephone...
