Oliver in emergency operation

04 December 2000

Albion star Adam Oliver has undergone a life-saving operation on a burst appendix. The talented 20-year-old midfielder, who comes from West Bromwich, was rushed to Sandwell General Hospital on Friday after having suffered stomach pain for three days. His mother Ann Oliver, from Stone Cross, today said that the situation had been very serious but the operation had been successful and he was now recovering. It is the latest blow for the youngster who is seen as the one of future stars at the Hawthorns. He is on the injury list after damaging his knee last month and was not expected to play until the new year. Mrs Oliver said: "He had been having stomach pains since Wednesday and he didn't think it was anything to worry about. He even went down to the Albion on Thursday. Then he got up on Friday morning and he was in a really bad way so we rushed him to hospital. They operated on him straight away. They said it was a really close thing because the appendix had actually burst. He is on strong pain killers but recovering well. The doctors are really pleased with his progress and he is on the mend. He's still not very well but he is going to be all right thankfully. It was quite a scare. It's been a stressful few weeks for him altogether with the injury to his knee as well." She said that they expected him to stay in hospital for the next few days while doctors monitored his condition. Oliver has played for the England youth side along with fellow young team mates Adam and James Chambers. The trio are seen as a good example of the Albion's youth policy.
