Villa offer rejected

24 July 2000

Albion Chairman Paul Thompson has turned down a renewed offer of £1 million from Aston Villa to buy out the 50% sell-on clause for Ugo Ehiogu despite speculation in the local press that he was about to accept. Given the well publicised offers of 6 and 7 million that have been made for the want-away defender, we here at BOING reckon that Thompson has done the right thing in standing his ground. Thompson has been quoted as saying that the sell-on clause should be honoured, and while we suspect that he'd be prepared to enter into some degree of negotiation, Villa are going to have to go a lot higher than they have done so far to get it started.
