Ugo move beckons as fans hurl abuse

22 July 2000

Villa beat Marila Pribram (local radio keeps saying that "Dukla Pribram" is wrong!) 3-1 at The Hawthorns today. Want-away players Southgate and Ehiogu were booed by Villa fans for the entire 90 minutes, whilst the fans sang "You're not fit to wear the shirt" when Joachim came on as a second-half sub.

In a complete U-turn to his comments earlier in the week about being happy to let players' contracts run down before letting them go for nothing, a seemingly schizophrenic Gregory said after the game: "If you don't want to play for Villa then you should go and play for someone else."

Ehiogu is desperate to go somewhere else, but Villa won't sell him! Today's treatment by the fans is likely to strengthen the resolve of all 3 players to move elsewhere ASAP. Ehiogu has commented with regard to Villa's rejection of Man City's £6 million bid and the 50% sell-on clause: "It didn't surprise me that this bid was rejected. Villa are over-valuing me because of this clause. Anyone wanting to buy me probably has to pay one-and-a-half times my real value because Villa will only get half of the fee. I would be keen to talk to anyone who is willing to make a bid for me."
