Clement: How much!

01 June 2000

Unfortunately, as things stand at the moment, Chelsea defender Neil Clement won't be joining us. Chelsea want £500,000 for his services and although Albion could easily afford this sum, they have declined to pay it for a player whose first team experience is limited, basically, to the games he played for us on loan last season. After a shaky start, Clement improved steadily and capped a fine performance against Charlton on the last day of the season with the cross for Taylor's goal - which secured three points to help us escape relegation. Chelsea, obviously, aren't short of a penny or two and seem quite prepared to hang on to Clement for as long as it takes to get the asking price - even though his immediate prospects for first team action look extremely limited. Perhaps we could take him back again on loan...?
