No chance of move for Clement

12 May 2000

Defender Neil Clement, after spending the last two months of the season here on loan, has told Chelsea that he is desperate to join West Brom for both professional and personal reasons. Chelsea manager Gianluca Vialli, however, has told him that this will NOT happen. He is adopting a policy of loaning out his talented youngsters until such time that (a) they have proved that they can fight for a place in the Chelsea team or (b) they have shown that they will never cut the mustard. Vialli rates Clement and thinks he'll be ready for the big time in 12 months. A quote from Vialli (admittedly, 3rd hand) went along the lines of:

""...you can go if they pay the right price - but West Brom won't be able to afford you...""
