Siggy Scoops the Silverware!25 April 2000The Annual "Player of the Year" awards ceremony took place last night. Thanks to Terry Wills for going along and giving us a summary of the proceedings: "There were several Branch awards to Sneekes, Flynn, Siggie and Raven. Tucka and Richard O'kelly were also honoured, James Chambers was named as Young Player of the Year and, in the award for Goal of the Season, Super Bob (amidst deafening applause) was asked to announce the winner from a sealed envelope. Guess who's name he pulled out! Yes - that overhead kick against Bolton. Great stuff." "The main awards went, in reverse order: 3rd Lee Hughes, 2nd Richard Sneekes, and the overall winner Larus Sigurdsson. He finished with so many trophies he must have needed a Removal van to transport them home! One of the highlights of the evening was a speech from Frank Skinner who, when reminiscing about some of his earliest memories, said that "I never thought we would be able to replace Mike Phelan but funnily enough Andy Townsend played for Southampton in the first match I saw at the Hawthorns!!!" The wording may not be spot on, but you get the drift - and yes, Andy was there." "One sad note was that Gary Megson was unable to attend as his wife was taken quite seriously ill over the weekend, and he naturally had to be at her bedside. I know we'll all wish her a very speedy recovery." "All in all it was a good night thanks, of course, to the win over the "Fish Fingers Eleven" from Cleethorpes. Look forward to meeting up with a lot of you on Saturday at the Suits for QPR day but before then don't forget its the first leg of the Kid's Cup Final tonight at the Hawthorns against Mansfield. Kick off 7 pm." "Oh yes, there was also a combined long round of applause for Tom and his Bluenoses, especially Paul Furlong. They've given us a fighting chance of preserving the Division One status that had to be in jeopardy after the surrender at Bescot." "Come on you Baggies!" Previous Stories:18 April 2000: QPR?
