QPR? Suits you, Sir...

18 April 2000

The smart dress day for the last away game of the season at QPR is taking shape nicely with articles in the match programme for the Grimsby game and notices all over the ground and surrounding buildings. The Albion ticket office has a notice on display asking fans to turn out in suits and ties for the occasion, suggesting the "Reservoir Dogs" style of dress (black suit and shoes, white shirt, thin black tie and the obligatory shades). The recorded announcement originally suggested the more traditional beachwear approach, but that has since been changed to "collar and tie, plus sunglasses"

Now local estate agent Paul Dubberley has upped the ante by announcing a £50 prize for the best dressed male and female Baggies fans, to be chosen and presented on the day. Publicity is well under way, with all the local media being hounded by various members of the BOING mailing list to ensure that everyone knows about the event.

So get smart! Suits @ Shepherds Bush! You know it makes sense.

Two Baggies fans set off for a Cockney sing-song...

Paul Thompson has also backed the campaign, promising that the Club will do all it can to help promote the idea (hence, probably, some of the above). BBC Midlands Today filmed and broadcasted a short piece at the Club Shop today showing fans "before and after" - so by the time the weekend arrives, it's pretty certain that just about everybody will know about the plan. Fortunately, rumours that the Club shop took down their notice because some miserable bugger had complained that they wouldn't pay his dry cleaning bill appear to be unfounded...

The campaign got a major boost on Thursday night when celebrity Baggie Adrian Goldberg mentioned it on the BBC's Watchdog programme, saying that for one day the Barmy Army would become the Barmy Armani - but he blew it when his co-presenter asked him if the suit he was wearing at the time was Armani and he sheepishly said "no"... Still, it's all helped the publicity to the point where there can't be many people who don't know about it now. Even the official WBA Web site has given it a mention!

Right. Last one to say "Let's go to work" is a Dingle!
