Kanu signs !30 July 2004Though it'e been a rumour for ages, hands up all Baggies who thought we'd actually manage to sign Nwankwo Kanu? Yeah, thought so. Sorry for the delay in passing on the news to anyone who's not yet heard - BOING news staff were working hard, soaking up the sun and watching Andy Flintoff smack the West Indies bowlers for six several times when the signing was officially announced. It transpires that Kanu actually passed the medical on Wednesday night, and quickly explained his reasons for joining Albion to Nigerian footbal web site Kick Off Nigeria - regular playing time and a reluctance to uproot himself from London. Kanu was approached by Liverpool, Aston Villa, Celtic and Real Zaragoza, but said "The managers of some of these clubs came to see me personally in my house in London to declare their interest in me, but I must say that West Brom?s Gary Megson sounded more like the one with the best plans for me. Where I was kept out in the cold for the greater part of last season [by Arsenal] informed my decision to go for a club that will keep me busy; that will really see me play and get my game back to the Kanu the world used to know" The article adds that Kanu's new wife is currently studying at University, and signing for Albion would also mean that he could continue his domestic life with with little disruption. Kanu has signed a three-year deal, and the former Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal star must surely be one of the most significant deals Albion have ever achieved in the transfer market - certainly in recent years, at least. We don't even want to think what it's done to our wage bill... Previous Stories:29 July 2004: Greening signs ! 16 July 2004: T-Mobile is new sponsor 14 July 2004: Signing Number Four ! News Index |
