It all went quiet...

12 July 2004

So much for the flurry of transfer activity we expected on Friday! Lomana Lua Lua is now talking to Portsmouth as the talks on personal terms ended in failure. Reports in the Mercury say that Albion were prepared to match his wages at Newcastle as well as giving him an extra year on his contract, but he wanted an increase of 50% on top and we told him where to go. Apparently Albion have wised up in the wages department and are prepared to offer realistic levels of pay for Premiership players, but that doesn't apply to people taking the p***. Middlesbrough denied that anyone had made an approach for midfielder Jonathan Greening, and reports in Scandinavia said that John Carew was talking to Besiktas and laughing at the suggestion he might be joining Albion.

To make matters worse, Jason Koumas handed in a transfer request which the club turned down. According to the Mercury he was unhappy at being paid only ?4,000 a week here, and both Fulham and Everton are ready to make a move to sign him.

Meanwhile, in the "scraping the bottom of the barrel on a quiet news day" department, TeamTalk reckoned we might possibly be thinking about wondering whether or not to enquire about making a move for Gary Flitcroft of Blackburn Rovers, as it seems he has fallen out with Graham Souness and is no longer their captain and somebody down the pub reckoned Gary Megson may have read about him once in a newspaper or something.
