O'Connor and Hulse signed

11 July 2003

Early reports, broadcast on Radio Stoke and printed in the Birmingham Post suggested that midfielder James O'Connor has signed for Albion. And they turned out to be true - at an afternoon press conference, he and our other new signing Rob Hulse were paraded and answered questions alongside manager Gary Megson. O'Connor will wear No. 4 this season now that Derek McInnes' move to Dundee United has gone through, and Hulse will wear No. 15.

However, the signing of Swiss defender Bernt Haas from Sunderland has hit a technical hitch - though not over personal terms as Sunderland claimed on their official site. Albion had agreed a fee with them, agreed personal terms with Haas and signed the contract, but there seems to be an issue between him and Sunderland regarding the cancellation of his existing contract. Needless to say, the puns are flowing - "fingers Bernt by Haas" would be a typical example...
