Haas: Sunderland agree fee

02 July 2003

According to Sunderland's Official Web Site, Albion have had their ?500,000 bid for Swiss International right back Bernt Haas accepted, and the player now has to agree personal terms. Hass had been on loan to FC Basle for all of last season, but the Swiss club could not meet the half a million needed to sign him permanently.

Haas, born on 28th April 1978, originally joined Sunderland from Grasshoppers Zurich for ?800,000 in August 2001, and one of his first appearances was in a friendly against Albion at the Hawthorns. But he went on to make just 27 appearances for Sunderland before falling from favour with Peter Reid and being transfer listed at the end of that season. Luckily, although playing his International football for Switzerland, Haas was born in Austria and is reckoned to hold dual nationality, so there should be no work permit issues to trip up the deal.

We're just wondering what songs could be used for this lad when he arrives! "Haas" rhymes with glass, class, pass and - erm - probably a few other words, so there's plenty of scope...
