Batson leaves Albion20 June 2003In a move that has come completely out of the blue, Albion have announced that Brendon Batson, who had the title of Managing Director, has stepped down as a Director and employee of the club. The official web site commented on Batson's departure saying: "Brendon has made an important contribution to stabilising our operation in the last year. Regrettably, there will not be a sufficiently meaningful role for Brendon in the future and we have therefore faced up to what is a very difficult decision." When the first wave of restructuring was carried out last summer, Brendon Batson was put in charge of all football matters, with Chief Executive Mike O'Leary looking after everything else. However, with the Manager, Gary Megson, reporting directly to the Chairman, it did seem as though Batson's role was hard to define, and today's announcement rather confirms that. However, with Batson's extensive knowledge of the game and the respect he earned during his time with the PFA, it's a great pity that a more meaningful role could not be found for him. It seems unliklely that he'll be out of work for very long.
