Quotes of the Week

10 April 2003

Being a football fan for long enough generally makes you fairly laid back when it comes to some of the things being said "in the game" - but now and again, the odd quote still has me thinking "did he REALLY say that?" And today it's happened twice - with both quotes coming from our manager, Gary Megson, speaking about Jeremy Peace's purchase of enough shares from Paul Thompson to get controlling interest in the club. First up, on the official site:

"The chairman has probably come in during the hardest time this club has had for the last 17 or 18 years"

Hardly. Without wanting to stir up old debates again, surely the worst time was when the Club was facing relegation from Division One and losing £30,000 a week - the state it was in when Paul Thompson took over from Tony Hale? Taking over a Club that has just won promotion to the Premiership, was well into profit and with major redevelopments just carried out would seem like a pretty cushy number to most people. Unless, of course, he's referring to the introduction of the transfer window.

At least Megson seems to have learnt something - though it's a pity he couldn't have done so a year earlier and saved us a lot of bother:

"If the chairman and board think this is a good thing, who am I to argue?"
