Transfer humiliation

30 January 2003

"Salva's got a proven track record and has a tremendous pedigree in Spain. He is strong in the air with a fantastic eye for goal. We are confident he'll score the goals we need to get us out of our current predicament"

If only that quote, about striker Salva Ballesta, had come from our manager. But it's come from Sam Allardyce instead, as the Spanish striker who wasn't interested in leaving Spain to play for us signed yesterday for Bolton Wanderers until the end of the season.

Further signings for Albion now look extremely unlikely as it seems for all the world that the Club have resigned themselves to their fate. As one correspondent told us today, "If the Board have given up on us, why the hell should they expect the fans to keep turning up?"

Good question.
