Arise Lord Megson!

17 October 2002

Gary Megson is to be honoured by receiving the historic title of Lord of the Manor of West Bromwich, thanks to his achievement of "putting West Bromwich on the map". The presentation will take place at a special ceremony at the Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston at the end of November complete with various medieval clobber such as knights, minstrels and so on. No jokes about them being used because that was the last time we were in the top flight, please!

But in case you think this means he's receiving the Queen's, or even the Government's blessing, think again. The title was bought by a local businessman from the Earl of Dartmouth in order for him to bestow it on worthy citizens who had made a significant contribution to the local community. Nonetheless, Megson is quoted saying:

"To receive an award like this is not only a personal great honour for me, but also for the club and our supporters. Although it might seem a little tongue in cheek, the sentiment behind the award speaks for itself."

Next week: His Majesty King Jason receives an OBE for scoring the six goals that spelt miserable defeat for Birmingham City at the Hawthorns on Saturday. Possibly.
