Greve promoted!

14 October 2002

Albion's Danish nursery club, Greve, has won promotion with two games still to play. As we reported last week, a win at the weekend would seal it - they got a draw away on Saturday at Roskilde, but their two rivals for the automatic spot both lost so up they go. One didn't lose until the Sunday, however - which gave Greve's players, staff and fans the strange feeling of celebrating without actually doing anything - but they carried on singing into the night anyway. The fanclub is now officially the proud owner of a video recording of their head coach, Jan Kalborgs, homemade karaoke dance - it's going to be pretty difficult for some of the players to take him seriously at their next training session!

Everything good has a bad side: The connection to WBA is history as changes in management on both sides of the North Sea have made further cooperation seem unlikely. The partnership has not delivered a great deal other than a location for a few preseason friendlies, and even those were hard to arrange against good opposition because of the earlier start to the Danish season. With both clubs promoted, and stronger financially, both will look to develop within themselves rather than through partnerships.

But it was fun while it lasted, though? Greve fans will miss the handful of pissed Baggies strolling through the streets of Copenhagen early mornings, the terrible tired faces in the train to Jutland, the now legendary Bus Running and injury victim Neil Reynolds insisting on postponing his surgery until AFTER the game. Cheers Baggies - you're all true fans and do your club proud!
