Hreidarsson declines offer

Ipswich defender Hermann Hreidarsson has turned down a move to Albion because he doesn't want to uproot his family - he has a wife and four children, some of whom are at school in Suffolk. Last night's East Anglia Daily Times suggested that the move was in doubt, carrying the following quote from Hreidarsson:

"Nothing has been decided yet. I want to talk things over with my wife and will talk to West Bromwich again and then make my decision."

Reports suggest that he was happy with the personal terms offered by Albion, but that he didn't fancy another relegation fight. There's also the possibility that the newly rearranged bonus scheme, which would only pay the players' win bonuses if the team stayed up, may have put him off.

To be honest, £4 million was a lot to pay for a 28 year old signing up for, perhaps, a three or four year contract with little chance of getting a fee towards the end. With the signing of Gregan completed and moves for Lee Marshall still in discussion, the money could perhaps be spent elsewhere.
