Gregan signed?

05 August 2002

According to sources, Sean Gregan will be unveiled to the media as a West Bromwich Albion player at 2pm on Monday afternoon. He passed his medical on Saturday, and was due to sign the contract at the Hawthorns this morning. The signing ends a few weeks of on-off speculation over the move, with personal terms the major sticking point after Albion and Preston agreed a transfer fee of £2 million.

The Lancashire Evening Post had the following to say on Saturday about the move:

"Gregan had been expected to sign on the dotted line yesterday. But following a whole series of unseemly squabbles between the two clubs over the player, it was only fitting another last-minute snag should once again put it in jeopardy. I understand the problem involved a late change of heart by Albion over personal terms and it was only settled after talks well into the evening in Birmingham involving agent Paul Stretford."

Gregan first caught Megson's eye six years ago when he was manager of Blackpool, and the Baggies Manager has been pursuing him ever since. At 6 foot 2 inches, Gregan is a commanding figure on the pitch, and Megson described him as a "natural leader".

Meanwhile, press reports have linked us with strikers Michael Bridges and Barry Hayles, and with a certain Sunderland winger called Kevin Kilbane...
