Thompson to leave in two weeks

05 May 2002

Following the announcement last week of his intention to stand down as Chairman once a successor has been found, Paul Thompson has today announced that he will be leaving on Monday 20th May. The previous suggestion was that the process of appointing a replacement could take as long as three months.

Thompson is quoted saying:

"As West Bromwich Albion Plc is a public company there are a few matters which I need to deal with as Chairman before I leave the Board and these will be dealt with over the next couple of weeks."

"I have now decided to leave the Board at this time to ensure that Gary Megson has no reason and no excuse whatsoever for leaving the Club. I wish Gary every success in his ongoing role as Manager of West Bromwich Albion and I am pleased that he has said that he has no intention of leaving the Club and that he is now continuing with his job in the normal manner."

"I would like to thank all my colleagues on the Board, all the management, players and staff and all the shareholders and supporters for their contribution to the Club while I have been Chairman."

"Finally, I would particularly like to thank the very many supporters who have sent me letters, e-mails, faxes and posts on web-sites over the past few days asking me not to leave and thanking me for my time as Chairman. I am very grateful to all of you. Thank you very much indeed."

No reason has been given for the accelerated departure other than as stated above. Hopefully the minority of supporters planning a witchhunt for Thomspon will be happy with the news.
