Windass for Albion?

29 November 2001

Middlesbrough striker Dean Windass seems to be frequently mentioned in the news at the moment. A few days ago, a rumour surfaced that Megson was trying to sign him on loan, which nobody took all that seriously - after all, these rumours are popping up all the time and dying out again.

However, next thing was that the club denied this - or at least, said that if it was taking place it was without their knowledge. Wednesday's Guardian also reported on the possible loan, seeming very certain that it was about to happen.

Last night, though, the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette published the following article:

Striker Dean Windass is set to become the latest player to leave Boro as Steve McClaren continues his Riverside clear-out.

West Brom manager Gary Megson has put in a bid for Windass, who only moved to Teesside last March, though Boro were today unable to comment on the move.

Windass has proved popular with the Riverside faithful because of his never-say-die, gung-ho approach.

He also gets his share of goals but has found it hard to win a regular first-team place under McClaren, who favours Szilard Nemeth's more cultured style.

Bryan Robson signed Windass from Bradford shortly before transfer deadline day in a complex deal worth around £1m.

West Brom, however, will not expect to pay anything like the same kind of money.

Bloomin' right we won't want to pay that sort of money! The former Oxford striker, signed there by former Albion boss Denis Smith from non-League, has already been in the news regarding Albion - he was extremely dismissive about us after the dismal capitulation at the Manor Ground when Smith returned for the first time after taking over - accusing us of powder-puff defending, and of not being sufficiently well equipped in the testicular region.

Which, at the time, was fair comment really...
