More confusion over Koumas?

13 November 2001

The following piece appears on the official Tranmere Rovers web site:

West Brom In Dreamland

The West Brom board must be anxious to convince their Manager and supporters that they are ambitious.

Yet again they spoke publicly today of their interest in Jason Koumas and yet again they have dressed up their two and a half month old bid as £2million - yet another misleading 'Simonsen style' headline grabbing figure.

If they have real ambition why don't they put in a serious bid that is based on Koumas? value and not their promotion dreams.

What the Chairman is failing to tell people is that the offer, put in on August 21st actually lapsed after 48 hours and that the £2 million was only actually payable if West Brom get promoted, in the next three years, and Koumas plays 100 games!!

The reference to "Simonsen style" apparently relates to the £3.3 million transfer of Steve Simonsen from Tranmere to Everton. Tranmere only got £750k up front, with extras depending on appearances and other things such as Simonsen playing for England!

However, reports on Merseyside radio stations over the weekend still state that a deal is being discussed with Albion for Koumas after all, and that a move is imminent - the only sticking point appearing to be the size and payment terms of the fee.
