Trewick appointed as Rams coach

11 July 2001

Former Albion Youth Team boss John Trewick has been appointed first team coach at Derby County. The Derby Evening Telegraph carried the following article describing his appointment:

John Trewick starts work tomorrow as Derby County's coach, in succession to Steve Round. After Round decided to join Steve McClaren at Middlesbrough, Jim Smith and Colin Todd set about assessing the applicants for the post. "Colin did most of the interviewing," said the Rams manager, "and on the basis of that, John was clearly on top. "John played for me at Oxford United and he was also strongly recommended by Ray Harford, who worked with him at West Bromwich Albion."

Trewick (44) was born in Northumberland and began as a schoolboy with West Brom before signing as a professional. He was an England Schools and Youth international midfield player. He moved to Newcastle for a then club record fee of ?250,000 in December, 1980, but was hampered by injuries and, as a loan player, played a small part in Oxford's Division Three championship-winning side. Trewick returned to Newcastle and was in Arthur Cox's side that returned to Division One in style. When he was released in 1984, Smith snapped him up for Oxford. Trewick was an ever-present when Oxford won Division Two and, after Smith's departure, played in the League Cup final success over Queen's Park Rangers. After two years with Birmingham City, he played for Bromsgrove Rovers, Hartlepool United, Barnet and Gateshead before returning to West Brom as a coach and, at one stage, caretaker-manager. Trewick was more recently very successful as Youth coach but left the Hawthorns towards the end of last season.
