Megson targets named?

26 June 2001

According to a report in the Express and Star, Gary Megson has just named three players as targets to the Albion Board. They are Stephen Hughes of Everton, Peter Kennedy of Watford and Aaron Brown of Bristol City.

Hughes was signed by Arsenal a while back as the Next Best Thing, but failed to make the grade there and hasn't fared much better at Everton - and is now available on a free transfer.

Kennedy played at left back during Watford's promotion season, and scored a few goals for them - perhaps his signing will push Neil Clement up into the left wing position, although the players do seem to have a lot in common. No fee has been mentioned, although reports from Gillingham, who have also shown an interest in him, suggest it would be around £300,000

Aaron Brown is a promising left sided midfielder, 20 years of age, although reports suggest he has just signed a new contract at Bristol and would therefore command a reasonable fee as well.

However, the report goes on to say that Megson has just arrived back to see what progress, if any, has been made on bringing in players - which suggests that he had already given a list of names to the Board before going on holiday. Whether the names listed are genuine targets or idle speculation remains to be seen.
