McInnes out for the season

21 November 2000

West Brom Captain and influential midfielder Derek McInnes will be out of action for the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage. Although the injury was sustained against Wimbledon several weeks ago, it was not properly diagnosed until he continually failed to recover from treatment. McInnes will be undergoing surgery to repair the damage - although this has already been delayed by an illness - and faces a probable nine months of recuperation before playing again.

Since joining the team just after the start of the season, McInnes has been playing a major role in Albion's revival and their ascent of the table, and the news comes as a major blow just as Albion looked poised to start a promotion charge. The task now is to find an adequate replacement through the transfer market; funds are available, but as Gary Megson says "you do not find a Derek McInnes around every corner".
