Gabbidon to complete Cardiff switch

21 September 2000

Rumours, reported here last week, that full back Daniel Gabbidon is making a permanent move to Cardiff City appear to be coming true. Gabbidon is due to complete his move in the very near future, with the clubs having agreed a fee of £500,000 now with up to a further £300,000 to follow depending on appearances and on Cardiff's performance.

The transfer was originally felt to be unlikely due to the size of the fee and Gabbidon's reluctance to move down to a lower division - however, with the backing of Sam Hamman it doesn't look like money is a problem, and Gabbidon has now stated that he hasn't had the happiest of times at West Brom and now seems more comfortable with moving back nearer home. Several managers have alluded to problems with Gabbidon that haven't been of a football nature, with only Denis Smith appearing to be keen to give him any serious first team action. Albion have decided that it would be in the best interests of all parties concerned for him to move on and restart his career - while at the same time releasing further funds to strengthen the Albion side.
