Still in the Fox-hunt?

18 August 2000

Albion have announced that they have given up on the chase for out-of-favour Spurs winger Ruel Fox. Manager Gary Megson is quoted as saying that unless there is some major change in the situation, the deal is off and he doesn't want to hear another word about it. Albion have been getting fed up with the length of time Fox has been taking to come to an agreement with Spurs over settlement of his contract despite the two clubs having agreed a fee of £150,000 several weeks ago.

However, word from other sources is that the interest is far from over and the latest statement is simply an attempt to hurry things along. Despite this, it's hard not to feel a sense of frustration at the apparent lack of progress with the season well under way - Fox gives the impression, right or wrong, that he's not as desperate to come and play for the club as we'd like. On the other hand, it may well be that doing deals to move players out of the club comes further down the list of priorities for Spurs than other preparations for the new season. In addition, Albion's patient but persistent approach to the transfers of Clement, Roberts and McInnes has paid off - so maybe the same will happen here.
