Fredgaard joins Albion on loan

09 February 2000

West Bromwich Albion have at last made a signing - albeit only on loan till the end of the season. Carsten Fredgaard, a Danish International, has made the move from Sunderland and plays on the left wing, in left midfield or up front. Ironically, it could be our recently departed Kevin Kilbane who is keeping him out of their side!

Sunderland paid £1.7 million for Fredgaard, described at the time as one of Scandinavia's most sought-after midfielders. They were said to have fought off a number of top European clubs for the his signature, and the size of the fee - hefty for a Scandinavian - together with Peter Reid's reputation as a shrewd buyer would suggest that Fredgaard is something quite special. However, he has only made four first team appearances this season, three of which were in the Worthington Cup. During one of these - the 5-0 defeat of Walsall - he scored twice.

Thomas Hojmark, an Albion fan based in Denmark, says of Fredgaard:

""I've seen him play several times. No doubt he's fast as hell and when he's really good he'll trouble any defence. Unfortunately he didn't make much of an impact when he recently went with the National League team to Spain - but as the whole team was crap you can't really blame him. Apart from that I've always liked his style very much - fast, direct pace with pretty good technique. And based on what I know about him, I was actually quite surprised that he didn't make it big in Sunderland. If he's able to resurrect his old form, we can expect a most positive impact on the Albion side""

The small print of the loan agreement is said to include a clause that Sunderland can recall him any time they like once the first 30 days of the loan has passed. Hopefully by then he'll have popped a few goals in! Reports suggest that Little is not stopping there, but still looking hard for players on both a loan and a permanent basis, with the possibility of adding another new face by the weekend.
