Bristol City 0 - West Bromwich Albion 1
Kev Buckley:The highlights package had Albion as deserved winners with pretty much all of the action making the package having us on the ball, however, other post match reports are not quite so complimentary: but no matter, it's the result that counts. Nor clear whether the two up front is playing a part in the much higher press we seem to have been adopting but that press was in evidence throughout the highlights reel, with the first beneficiary being Maja, who was in on goal, only to have a defender just nick it off him, ahead of the shot. Maja's up-top partner, Heggebo was, as he often has been, running all across the front line, although he now seems to be getting some decent ball, and, in combining twice with Wallace down the right-hand side, saw us gain a corner. Styles, now the left-footed deliver of choice, slung one over to the back post where Campbell found space to power a header goalwards, and although a defender made what initially appeared to see that header blocked on the line, only to be followed up by Maja who put it well over, replays, and indeed the ref, without the benefit of them, awarded the goal to the centre-back, and not the centre-forward. The City defence, devoid of many of its regulars, looked all at sea, as a long throw from Imray was delivered, with Molumby's shot, from the part-clearence to the edge of the box, just going wide, and again, the throw was obtained from yet more good work down our right. The second half highlights suggested that we were sticking with the right-sided threat of a, dare I say, somewhat rejuvenated Wallace, but it was still only one-nil at around the fifty seventh (no clock throughout the footage: but the commentator mentioned the time) minute when the home side drew a fine save out of Griffiths. After that it was back to Albion action: Imray having a shot, and then more pressing of City, right up inside their box, seeing Heggebo having a shot blocked, with the rebound falling to Price on the edge, and although he got this effort on target, the City keeper prevented us going two-up. There was still time to think that all the good showings might come to nothing as the home side broke down out right, after Imary tried to con the ref into awarding a penalty, and as the central striker stepped over the cross at the near post - not that he had a colleague in behind him - the ball struck Styles, inside the six-yard-box, but thankfully, deflected straight onto Griffiths. With Albion still pressing up the field, most of our players didn't have all that far to run, so as to celebrate in front of the away end, as the ref blew for full time. All the other results went for us: Leicester and Blackburn drawing, whilst Oxford and Portsmouth lost, with the latter conceding six, meaning that their game-in-hand advantage is countered, slightly, by them now having a worse goal-difference than us. Perhaps the one downside, to a day on which we ended our woeful away form, is the fact that the international break will take away some of the momentum built up over the last couple of games. The result also saw the BOING mailing list's, Adam Cotton's, prediction record finally take a hit: not that anyone on the list will be grumbling about that! And for those not on the list, Adam's predictions, made some four games ago, have us drawing our next four games. Brendan Clegg:I managed to watch the game on my phone during an event so just some very quick thoughts. This was another good display. We didn’t hit the heights of Hull, partly due to our own quality in the final 3rd, but also because Bristol know a bit more about how we play now and did come up with some ways to stop us and cause us problems. They closed Imray very quickly and for spells pressed us in the right areas; they also found ways to overload us and pass the ball quickly through us with one touch football. But - as in other games under Mozza - we worked like mad, fought for everything, made good calls about when to play and when to clear and we looked pretty solid. In truth, we had the situations to make it more comfortable and we slipped back a little bit to that erratic, panicked and poor choice style too often. I recall moments where Price, Wallace, Imray, Heggebø and Maja all had decent chances or just needed to play a simple pass to put a teammate in but either swiped at it, were too slow or just got poor shots off. We were definitely holding on a bit at the end but we did so and the subs were sensible overall. Morrison continuing to make a mockery of the other previous head coaches. We’re not out of the woods yet but we looked doomed and suddenly we look like we can beat anyone. I had a feeling of confidence about this game… when was the last time we felt that away from home? A brilliant way to sign off for the international break!
