West Bromwich Albion 1 - Hull City 1
Brendan Clegg:Felt like 2 points dropped or maybe even a point gained after Hull’s later chances. Frustrating though as we need to be winning. The 11 was difficult to work out formation-wise but from kickoff we could see it was 4-3–3/4-4-2 with Price right back, Heggem left back and in midfield Molumby wider right, presumably to cover Price. Up front Grant was central and Armstrong off the right, although it was fluid and sometimes much more 4-4-2 than 4-3-3. I didn’t think we were that bad in the first half. We dominated it but it was the end product in and around their box - either over playing, making the wrong decision, not shooting or just lacking quality. The best chance coming to Armstrong who swiped it over. I think the ball wasn’t great but, as against Leeds and Burnley, these are presentable chances that he should be finishing off… and I guess if he did we’d be more comfortable about our position. Second half we struggled to get going and after a sloppy spell allowing Hull into it, we hit the bar from a good move, applied pressure, missed good chances again before Price put us ahead. It should’ve been safe from there but we conceded a really poor goal with 15 to go… Price and Fellows going to sleep at the back post and I thought our centre backs and Wildsmith could’ve done better from the second ball. Having already made subs, Mowbray went for it with a very attacking team with Dike and Lankshear up top and Grady & Molumby in centre mid. We lost control, Hull should probably have scored but for Wildsmith making a couple of big saves, and although we got into areas we didn’t do enough - a close range header that should have hit the target probably our best chance. Overall I’d say Mowbray made too changes to cover Styles being injured and it impacted our cohesion. Diakite should’ve kept his place alongside Bartley with Holgate going to right back and Heggem left. How we’re not playing Fellows is a head -scratcher for me in a team that needs to goals to win matches. I’m sure Mowbray could argue that their goal and if Armstrong finishes that chance then it proved his decision. We need to be careful not to blow this but I think Maja is the perfect foil for Armstrong if we can get him fit.
Going to keep shamelessly plugging my marathon run for Black Country Women’s Aid. The response has been amazing and I’m so grateful! |
